How to get food on time in St Leger

Walking through the higher part of the Morvan

At 6:30 I leave early listening to the birds, following a route from another pilgrim that I prepared at home in my GPS. Not walking via the GR trails over the Mont Beuvray. On strong advise of the owner of the Gite in Athez because the GR trail is very steep and slippery after all this rain. I got an enthusiastic explanation about the history of this building. How it changed from a School into a Gite and was maintained by her family. This talk is a nice break in my silence :) For my stay I have to pay only 9 euros.
Now I am on my way, climbing slowly but around the 'Mont Beuvray' and 'Le Haut-Folin', going to Larochemillay where a the next Gite should be. Or camp somewhere and quickly move on the next day.
The Mont Beuvray is an isolated hill, guard over the valley of the Arroux, over the mountains near Auton, facing up to the Massif Central and the Alps. Covered with a centuries-old beech forest. At its summit was the oppidum Bibracte, the capital of the land of Eduenen. There they chosen in 52 BC, all gathered Gallic tribes, Vercingetorix as the supreme chief of the Gallic armies before they went to fight against Ceasar. It was a big fenced camp. Maybe also with Asterix and Obelix :)
When you walk through the dense forests around you now, you can still imagine that they jump from behind the trees and encircle you at any time.
I hope to come back again later with less ballast. To visit the beautiful nature and visit the interesting museum about the history and excavations there.

Because I have too little to eat with me, I have to reach the nearest shop in St Leger-sous-Beuvray, that is closing at 12:00. My only option for food. On the way I drop my last bread on the street, pick it up again and eat it. It is all I have. Exciting are the first 20 km. Can I arrive on time ? Fasting and walking as pilgrim is not a good combination, if you spend so much energy :)
But on my way, I also enjoy the impressive steep slopes, rocks and water. Lucky enough I'm still on time for my food. The bakery is empty, all bread is bought the tourist who arrived earlier with their car. Lots of Dutch license plates here. Luckily, there is still a small shop with bread. I have a simple lunch sitting outside in the rain and reorganize my backpack. To get energy for later. A woman who is waiting in the car on her husband, is staring at me what I do there in the rain. Thinking I am crazy. Maybe I am ? :)

De hogere Morvan 1 - Eten kopen in St Leger-sous-Beuvray

Vroeg 6:30 vertrek ik luisterend naar de vogels, over een route van iemand anders die ik thuis gelukkig op mijn gps heb gezet. Niet over de GR paden over de 'Mont Beuvray' (mij erg afgeraden in de gite in Athez, waar de beheerster mijn 9 euro aannam, enthousiast uitleg over de gite gaf en zo even mijn stilte doorbrak, wel gezellig :)
Nu dan oppad, wel hogerop maar om de 'Mont Beuvray' en 'Le Haut-Folin' heen, naar Larochemillay waar een gite moet zijn, maar verder niets. En anders toch maar kamperen en de volgende dag snel doorlopen.

De Mont Beuvray is een geïsoleerde bult,  wachtpost over de vallei van de Arroux, de bergen bij Auton, met uitzicht tot aan het Centraal Massief en de Alpen. Begroeid met een eeuwenoud beukenbos. Op zijn top lag het Oppidum Bibracte, hoofdstad van het land der Eduenen. Daar riepen in 52 voor Christus alle bijeengekomen Gallische stammen Vercingetorix uit tot hoogste chef van de Gallisch legers, voordat zij tegen Ceasar gingen vechten. Het was een geweldig groot omheind kamp. Wie weet waren Asterix en Obelix daar ook wel :)
Als je door deze dichte bossen heen loopt, kun je voorstellen dat de Galliërs je ieder moment kunnen omsingelen, en alles in de gaten hadden in dit gebied. 

Ik kom hier nog eens terug met minder ballast. Prachtige natuur en er is ook nog een interessant museum over de historie en opgravingen daar.

Omdat ik te weinig eten bij mij heb, wil ik voor winkelsluitingstijd 12 uur in de enige plaats zijn waar eten te koop is, 'St Leger-sous-Beuvray'. Onderweg laat ik mijn restje brood op straat vallen, raap het weer op en eet het op. Mag nu niets verspillen. Spannend zijn die eerste 20 km. Vasten en pelgrimeren is toch geen goede combinatie, als je zoveel energie verbruikt :)
Maar onderweg geniet ik toch ook van de indrukwekkende stijle hellingen, de rotsen en het water. Ik kom toch op tijd voor mijn eten. De bakker wel leeggekocht door iedereen die iets sneller met de auto zijn brood ging halen. Heel veel Nederlandse kentekens hier. Maar er is gelukkig nog een winkeltje. In de regen rugzak af, herpakken en lunchen. Wat armoedig, maar goed om bij te tanken. Een vrouw die op haar man wacht in de auto, zit mij met een zure blik aan te staren, wat ik daar toch zit te doen in de regen.
