Day 91 Tu/Di: Saint Privat d'Allier -》 Saugues 22 km ( 800 meter higher )

Above cafe 'Acrobat' I sleep with Sylvain from Switzerland, Koske from Japan and Jean from France. Koske wants to walk to Santiago in 30 days (what would take normally 40 or 50 days). I try to explain that this is very difficult, and this makes it a Camino with a lot of stress and injuries, with no time to open yourself for everything on your way. But each one should walk its own Camino and decide for himself how. I don’t meet Koske anymore, far before me. I hope he will be well. But Jean, an older Frenchmen, I will meet often, even into Spain.
During our food we translate for each other from French to German to English. Complicated, but fun. And that is how we learn more about each other :)
When we sit down at breakfast, Sebastian enters the café to my surprise, for a cup of coffee. Strange how you meet each other again and again. He noticed a message that I had written in a church for him :)
Such beautiful conversations with Benjamin and Sebastian, I did not have that yet with the new pilgrims after 'Le Puy en Velay. It also communicates slowly in my poor French and German. It's wonderful when I can talk, just English but that is rare now. And Dutch or Flemish is even harder to find.
Fortunately, there is a good chance that I meet Benjamin and Sebastian again. And to be on my way again, also walking alone makes me very excited. Then I find peace connecting to my inner voice and God.
After a lovely sunny day yesterday, there is bad weather forecasts for this week. It warns us that the first part has a steep ascent and descent over rocky paths which become very slippery when it rains. With rain you better take the asphalt road. But it is a bit dry in the morning, when we walk to Saugues. So I go for the more difficult trail. It is a beautiful small path that goes up and down. With as reward the visit in a very small chapel on the top of a rock 'La Chapelle de Rochegude’. Beautiful views over this country with rocks, forests and deep valleys.
To my surprise I pass many people. I feel like a mountain goat, and have fun in avoiding all obstacles. The pounds that I have sent home and the improved condition is good for me. I greet everybody on the Camino, also in French to make contact. Wonderful moment is it when I am invited for a cup of coffee by a French group. I meet them again later during the few weeks that they walk, and get more coffee. They call me Jean. Little bit easier to pronounce then Hans :)

So I hope to meet the other pilgrims and get to know them better. Although there is not a lot of them that continue this year to Santiago. They walk for some weeks with or without bagage transport. Many with little hiking experience with starting aches. I try to help with some tips.
It is goes steep down to the river at the gorge of Allier. And then a long steep climb to 1100 meters. Getting rain and hearing thunder in the distance. Nice to walk on the plateau on the end. Many broom and grass. So we do not pause this day a lot, rising 800 meters and walking six hours. Sylvian can still follow me, what is strong during the first days. But he is forcing himself and plans to continue slower the next day. But I think it is a performance to walk like this his first 2 days. He is used to more mountains, coming from Switzerland.
In Saugues we find a youth hostel, where more pilgrims arrive. A nice reunion eating a dinner with all the pilgrims. It is cozy. Speaking in some German and full of humor with Hans Jacob and Jo. And with Jean-Marc and his wife from France who really do their best to speak in English with me.

Prachtige natuur

Boven cafe 'Acrobat' slaap ik samen met Sylvain uit Zwitserland,  Koske uit Japan en Jean uit Frankrijk. Koske wil in 30 dagen naar Santiago lopen. Ik raad hem aan die lat niet zo hoog te leggen. Anders wordt het een tocht met veel stress. Maar ieder moet zijn eigen tocht lopen en uitvinden hoe dit te doen. Koske zie ik daarna niet meer. Maar Jean ga ik nog heel erg vaak tegenkomen.
Tijdens ons eten is het vertalen van Frans naar Duits naar Engels. Gecompliceerd :)

Als wij aan het ontbijt zitten dan komt tot mijn verbazing Sebastian binnen voor een kop koffie. Wonderlijk dat je elkaar steeds weer tegen komt. Een berichtje dat ik voor hem had geschreven in een kerkje heeft hij gelezen:)
Zulke mooie gesprekken als met Benjamin en Sebastian heb ik nog niet gehad met de nieuwe pelgrims na 'Le Puy en Velay'. Het communiceert ook traag in mijn gebrekkig Frans en Duits. Het is heerlijk als ik even Engels kan praten, maar dat komt zelden voor. En Nederlands of Vlaams is ver te zoeken.
Gelukkig is er veel kans dat ik Benjamin of Sebastiaan weer tegenkom. En alleen lopen daar krijg ik nu ook even erg veel zin in. Dan kom ik pas toe aan mijn eigen innerlijke zoektocht.
Na een heerlijke zonnige dag gisteren,  is er voor deze week slecht weer voorspelt.  Men waarschuwt ons dat de eerste stijle afdaling en stijging over rotsachtige paden te glad wordt bij regen. Dan kun je beter de asfaltweg nemen. Maar het is nog even droog in de ochtend als wij op pad gaan naar Saugues. Dus boffen wij. Het wordt een prachtige afdaling en stijging die ik niet had willen missen. Met als hoogtepunt een klein kerkje boven op een rots: 'La Chapelle de Rochegude'. Prachtige uitzichten in dit land met rotsen, bossen en diepe dalen.
Tot mijn verbazing haal ik tijdens het stijgen en dalen veel mensen in. Ik voel mij als een berggeit, en heb lol in het ontwijken van alle hindernissen. De kilo's die ik naar huis heb gestuurd en de conditie door 3 maanden lopen doen mij goed. Ik groet onderweg iedereen wel even in het Frans om contact te maken. Prachtig moment is het als ik door een franse familie wordt uitgenodigd voor een kop koffie. Ik zie hun later nog vaak terug. Zij noemen mij Jean. Iets makkelijker :)

Zo hoop ik de andere pelgrims toch iets beter te leren kennen. Hoewel er niet veel doorlopen naar Santiago. Veel onderweg voor een week met of zonder bagage transport. Veel met weinig wandel ervaring met de nodige start pijntjes. Ik probeer wat te helpen met wat tips.
Het gaat uiteindelijk weer flink omlaag naar de rivier naar de kloof van Allier. En daarna een lange stijle stijging naar 1100 meter. Regen en onweer in de verte. Wel mooi ook op de hoogvlakte. Veel brem en gras. Dus pauzeren we niet dit keer, stijgen 800 meter en lopen 6 uur door. Knap vind ik dat Sylvian mij toch bijhoudt,  waardoor hij zichzelf wel wat forceert. Morgen doet hij het misschien wat rustiger aan. Maar ik vind het wel een prestatie na 2 dagen lopen.
In Saugues vinden wij een jeugdherberg, rusten uit, en daar druppelen de pelgrims binnen. Mooi weerzien bij het eten tijdens het eten met alle pelgrims. Het wordt heel gezellig. Zoals in wat Duits en vol humor met Hans Jacob en Jo. En met Jean-Marc en zijn vrouw uit Frankrijk die erg hun best doen in het Engels voor mij.
