Day 138 Su/Zo: Belorado -》Villafranca Montes de Oca 12 km
Day 139 Mo/Ma: Villafranca Montes de Oca -》Atapuerca 20 km

That night I sleep not so well in Belorado because of the noise of the nearby bar. This goes on all night. In the morning drunk locals hit against the door of our albergue and shouting insults at us Pellegrino’s. Fortunately, they left again when we leave. Along our way we have also a lot of happy friendly meetings with Spaniards.
We continue on our path to Villafrance where another Fernández welcomes us. In a new albergue belonging to a fancy hotel 'San Anton'. A wonderful place to relax. Sitting in the grass I write down my experiences.
That evening we invite the 80-year-old French-speaking Jean at our table. He walks very slowly to Santiago. Since Le Puy en Velay I'm always meeting him and we enthusiastically embrace each other, while we cannot talk easy, while we cannot talk easily in French. We have a wonderful evening with Bart from Belgium, who is translating wonderful while Jean talks about his Camino and life. Full of humor and French charm. At the end of the evening he wants to drink with me 'Anis de Mono'. A very tasty but strong drink. I sleep well that night :)
The next day climbing with Anneke and Herma, up to the ‘Monto de Oca' to 1100 meters. With a lot of rain or in the winter, it is in this area sometimes impossible to walk. We move on over the red earth and descend to Atapuerca. There we find a simple cozy albergue ‘La Hutte' that quickly fills up. Having a nice pilgrim diner. With some red wine, sleeps well.
The next day walking on to Burgos. We see storm and thunder in the valley while we go over the top in the dark. Exciting because we cannot shelter from the storm and thunder, if it would come to us. Impressive to see. Lightning in the valley
We descend and walk into Burgos through the beautiful route along the river. Instead of the main route through an industrial area. For this route you must turn left after ‘Orbaneja-Riopica’ when you're just past the highway. A little further you will see yellow arrows again and you walk past the airport to the river. In the airport fence you can see the Camino habit of making a cross out of sticks and hang this in the fence. This was my first day with rain poncho after crossing the Pyrenees.
Burgos looks nice, so we all decide to stay two nights. To view the cathedral and good rest for the challenging Meseta that is waiting with 180 km long straight paths in the boiling sun without shade. A psychological challenge that some are skipping, taking the bus.
On my rest day I visit the impressive cathedral but actually I am too tired. I'm very happy when I meet Peter from Australia again. Having a fine dinner together makes the day quite well. And again we say goodbye.
In Burgos I think of my Maria. It's her birthday.

Naar Burgos door regen en onweer
Die nacht slaapt het niet best in Belorado door het lawaai van de bar vlakbij. Dat gaat de hele nacht door. 's Morgens schoppen dronken lui tegen de deur van onze herberg en schreeuwen verwensingen naar ons Pelerino's. Gelukkig zijn ze alweer weg als wij vertrekken. Onderweg komen wij gelukkig veel vriendelijke Spanjaarden tegen.
Verder op pad naar Villafrance waar een andere Fernández ons zeer goed verwend. In een nieuwe herberg bij een sjiek hotel 'San Anton'. Een heerlijke plek om tot rust te komen. Zittend in het gras schrijf ik mijn belevenissen op.
Die avond nodigen wij de 80 jarige Franssprekende Jean bij ons aan tafel uit. Hij loopt heel rustig aan naar Santiago. Sinds Le Puy en Velay kom ik hem steeds tegen en omhelzen wij elkaar enthousiast bij gebrek aan woorden. Een prachtige avond waarin Bart geweldig vertaald en Jean zijn camino levensverhaal verteld. Vol humor en franse charme. Aan het eind van de avond wil hij met mij een 'Anis de Mono' drinken. Een zeer lekker maar sterk drankje. Ik slaap goed die nacht :)
De volgende dag klimmen Anneke, Herma en ik omhoog op de 'Monto de Oca' naar 1100 meter. Bij veel regen of in de winter is dit gebied wel eens onbegaanbaar. Wij lopen over de rode aarde en dalen af naar Atapuerca. Daar vinden wij een eenvoudige knusse herberg 'La Hutte' die heel snel vol loopt. Weer eens een lekker pelgrimsmaal gegeten. Met wat rode wijn, slaapt goed.
Vandaar naar Burgos. Onweer in het dal terwijl wij in het donker over de top gaan. Spannend want schuilen voor het onweer kun je hier nergens. Maar imposant om de bliksem in het dal te zien.
Wij dalen af en lopen Burgos in via de mooiere route, langs de rivier. In plaats van de hoofdroute door een industriegebied. Je moet dan na Orbaneja-Riopica linksaf slaan als je de snelweg net voorbij bent. Iets verderop zie je weer gele pijlen en loop je langs het vliegveld naar de rivier. In het hek zie je de camino gewoonte om van stokjes een kruis te maken en in het hek te hangen.
Dit was mijn eerste dag met regenponcho na de oversteek over de Pyreneeën.
Burgos ziet er mooi uit, dus besluiten wij allemaal twee nachten te blijven. Om de kathedraal goed te bekijken en uit te rusten voor de uitdaging van de uitgestrekte Meseta. 180 km lang rechtdoor in de kokende zon zonder schaduw. Een psychologische uitdaging die sommigen overslaan.
Op mijn rustdag bezoek ik de indrukwekkende kathedraal maar ben eigenlijk te moe. Ben wel heel blij als ik Peter uit Australië weer ontmoet. Fijn diner samen maakt de dag helemaal goed. En weer nemen wij afscheid.
In Burgos denk ik ook aan mijn Maria. Het is haar verjaardag.
